Nature Study
Mrs. Gabi Beach
Grades K-1
We will take time outside, exploring God’s creation through nature journaling. We will focus on having good observation skills and recording our observations through pictures and words. We will learn to sit quietly and contemplate the beauty of creation. We will have different units on bugs, trees, birds, terrain, weather, etc.

This class we will explore fun games to help with our letter sounds, sight words, math and much more. With the help of cards, board games, and physical movement we will learn new things and master some phonetics and arithmetic concepts while having fun.

Crafting with the Saints

This will be a fun class where we learn about a new saint each week. Students will make a craft to take home that corresponds to something in that saints’ life to help them remember who that saint is.

Good and Beautiful Class

Grades K-1 and 2-4
This will be a “Charlotte Mason” style class that incorporates many aspects of the feast of living and beautiful ideas that are sometimes better learned with friends. We will spend time learning about classical artists and their work, doing a composer study, memorizing poetry, studying hymns, and memorizing a folk song.

Highlight PE

Highlight Catholic Ministries uses sport and adventure to foster virtue, truth and beauty. Throughout the year, students will have sport specific training as well as multisport exposure in speed and agility classes.
Materials Needed: Please make sure your child is prepared with tennis shoes, water and sunscreen for this class. Important note that this class is an OUTDOOR class and will meet outside unless the temperature drops below 25 degrees.

Spanish

We will focus on the basics of Spanish language, geography, and culture. We will learn Spanish language foundations such as the alphabet, numbers, colors, and things in daily life. We will learn about the history and culture of Spanish-speaking countries and complete fun crafts as we learn.

This class focuses on learning how your body moves and learning skills such as communicating without talking. It will include different games that will have basic dance principles and will allow the kids to learn how to move together as a team.

Let’s take a journey through the world and discover saints and geography. In this class we will focus on specific geographic locations and explore the saints that came from those areas of the world while learning about culture through fun activities. We will learn common phrases and prayers in Italian, Polish, French, Spanish and much more.

Picture-Perfect Science

Grades 2-5
Quality story books are appealing and memorable, as well as make scientific discovery exciting. Such scientific reasoning and exploration can unravel misconceptions by engineering models using collaborative and diverse materials. Examples of topics are plant seed dispersal mechanisms, how duck feathers achieve water-proofing, weather prediction by observing cloud formations, the mathematical shape of projectiles, and how wind can mechanically make energy. Fun, fun.

Beginning Irish Dance

Irish is a style that is very simple but can seem foreign to our bodies. In this class we will learn the basic Irish steps and how to work as a team. It will focus on how to create patterns with these simple steps and how to create your own patterns. They will choreograph part of the dance.

This class is for anyone who has previous Irish dance experience, knows the basic steps and would like to expand their skills. We will start learning more complicated combinations, as well as ways to add in personal flare.

Nifty Fifty US Geography

This class will combine geography, map work, arts and crafts, games, and memorization to give students greater appreciation for our wonderful 50 United States of America.

Handicrafts: The Lost Skills

Grades 3-6 and 7-12
Have you ever wondered what would happen if you visited the Little House on the Prairie family? Would you survive it? This class will explore skills common to your great-grandmother or grandfather, and most of us don’t know today, but rely on store bought products instead. For thousands of years, humans have made their own body care products, weaved and dyed fabric, and sewed their own clothes and bedding. This class will teach you some of these skills. We will study a few useful herbs, make salves, lip balm and lotions using natural ingredients. We will learn how to make soap from tallow and lye. We will dye fabric from food scraps and learn basic sewing and quilting skills to repair our clothes or make a beautiful item that will be useful to us. Throughout the year we will also create our own book of recipes, so we can continue to hone our newfound skills and be creative in handicrafting on our own. This class is intended to connect us with our past generations and mix their expertise with modern resources to learn to be more self-reliant.

Singing hymns is music, prayer, and poetry combined. Everyone should have some hymns that they keep in their heart for times when no hymnal is available. In this class we will learn Marian chants and liturgical Hymns with a focus on memorization.

Play Production

Interested in being a part of the play but don’t want to get on stage? Then this class is for you!! We will work on creating large set pieces, props, and costumes to assist the Play Performance class.

Basic Art Skills

Bringing out the Artist in you! Learn basic drawing techniques and Essentials of Art. We will explore different mediums throughout the year, using colored pencils, ink drawings, pastels, and charcoal.

Newspaper and Yearbook

In this class, students will work to produce a monthly newspaper to distribute to their fellow CCE students and their families. Students will discover the different components of a newspaper, the 5 W’s of journalism, the core principles of journalism, and the essential elements of a good news report. In addition to the work done to produce the newspaper, students in this class will work to collect photos throughout the year to create and format a CCE yearbook!

Drama/Play Performance

Grades 5-12
Our drama class will take the Great Saint John Paul II and his experience as an actor as our heritage. For JPII, the word is everything! The word is what determines the actions, emotions, costumes, setting and every other external aspect of the play. It can be an echo of the Christian “Word made flesh.” The word is enfleshed in the entire drama and is experienced fully, not simply known intellectually. The primary virtues of drama are solidarity, empathy, contemplation, and humility. We will explicitly put these virtues into habit during this class. The class will be performing a shortened Shakespeare drama.

Martial Art Fundamentals (no experience required)

Grades 5-12
This class is for students in grades 5-12 who have little or no experience with a stand-up striking art, as well as those students who took last years class and want/need to continue perfecting the fundamentals. Those fundamentals include stances, striking, kicking, blocking, footwork and philosophy of the virtues. This class will be rigorous. Students should come knowing that they are expected to conduct themselves with a certain amount of seriousness, and they will be expected to work hard and always be mindful of the instructor and the safety of other students. Since this is a one day a week course, the student will be
expected to practice at home in order to increase strength and flexibility as well as skill development. There will be a rank advancement test at the end of the year. Questions? Please email martial.virtue@gmail.com.

Martial Art Applications (prior experience and approval required)

Grades 5-12
This class is for students in grades 5- 12 who have prior martial arts training and have achieved their first rank. (Students who have had training only through CCE are welcomed, but not required, to also concurrently enroll in the Fundamentals class.) This class is designed to strengthen the skills acquired in the fundamentals class primarily by applying those skills with a partner. The class will include striking focus pads and kick shields, partner self-defense
drills and light to moderate sparring. Students should wear free flowing but sturdy clothing. Questions? Please email martial.virtue@gmail.com.

In addition, all students who wish to free spar will be required to have a mouthpiece, and males are required to have groin protection. Typically, this can run from $7 – $20 depending on the user’s preference.
World Geography
Mrs. Kate Feltes
Grades 6-8
The study of Geography highlights the intersection of language, culture, religion, economics, and struggles for world domination. This World Geography class will help the students to make more sense of both world history and current events, as well as encountering virtuous persons from various nations. The class will begin with some general geographic principals, and then proceed on a tour of the Mediterranean area, Europe, and parts of Africa and Asia, while the students explore various techniques for memorization and learning. Homework will include labeling and drawing maps, as well as memorizing locations of countries and names of cities.

- A world atlas that you don’t mind carrying to and from school. Any atlas printed after 2011 is just fine.
- A nice set of colored pencils. I like “A Fine Touch” brand, which tends to be 40—60% off at Hobby Lobby towards the end of the summer. 12 colors are sufficient, but bring any size package you like.
- A pencil sharpener
- Thin Sharpie felt-tip pens (the finest tips you can find)
Math and Logic Games

This will be a living math class. We will spend our time playing games and completing puzzles as a fun, interactive way to increase math and logic literacy. We will also read short, living math books in class to demonstrate to students how math and logic have been used to solve real problems throughout history.

IEW

In this class we will learn the structure and style writing method while exploring early U.S. History. Students will write several pieces throughout the school year and conclude with a research paper. One year of IEW writing experience recommended but not required.

Beginner Latin

Grades 6-9
This introductory Latin class will expand students’ Latin and English vocabulary using language from both the Church, the classics, and the sciences. This is not a Latin I class for first year high school students, but a preliminary introduction to Latin, for middle school students, which will make their later studies of Latin more productive and enjoyable. The class could also be used with profit as enrichment for students currently studying Latin I. The students will explore various techniques for memorization and learning. Homework will include memorizing vocabulary, based on skills learned in class.

Church Doctors and Mariology

Grades 8-12
In the fall, the class will cover the 38 Saints who also hold the unique distinction of Doctor of the Church. We will delve into who they were, what was going on in the church and in history that made each of these men and women’s contributions so unique. In the spring, the class will examine the 4 Catholic Marian Doctrines: Mother of God, Perpetual Virginity, Immaculate Conception, and Assumption, which help us understand Mary’s unique role in Salvation History.
**Please note that this class will require students to read outside of class and to complete a paper or presentation each semester.

Biology Lab
Mrs. Karma Langer
Grades 6-10
This hands-on course will support your student’s biological studies at home. In addition, by using collaborative learning and scientific report writing, your student will be prepared for college lab assignments. With an emphasis on ecosystem dynamics, diversity of life, organ dissection, cell structure and function, and trait inheritance, students will go through the scientific process of synthesizing known information, hypothesis testing via data collection, sorting variables in tables and graphs, and drawing conclusions. My focus is for students to think critically rather than simply memorize facts, to communicate their understanding verbally and in writing, and to become excited by scientific discovery. Homework between classes is expected to be up to 30 minutes: completing classwork from the last topic up to 15 minutes and watching a 15-minute video to prepare for the next topic.
