The elementary art class can get excited about the opportunity to work with clay that will be glazed and fired! Our subject of inspiration this quarter will be the saving power of our faith; as is such, we will be making holy water founts our of clay, and looking to our faith for inspiration with our wire sculpture unit. Build, Fix, Create, Innovate: STEM Fun Design Challenges — Colorado School of Mines students and local tech geeks
Each week, students will be presented with a challenge: build it, fix it, create it, win it. Along the way, they will engage in identifying opportunities, brainstorming, solution creation, testing, redesign, innovation, and presentation. All activities will be outdoors. STEM design challenges are a staple at technical and engineering colleges around the world, engaging students in creative thinking and bringing science concepts to life.

Drama Level I  Mrs. Darci Byrnes
In this class, students will study the basic concepts of play performance, understand and follow stage directions, all while using proper techniques for body and voice control. Students will focus on realistic acting, commanding audience attention, developing a stage presence, creating and sustaining a character. Each level will prepare one act in a three-act performance for friends and family. Acting not your thing? That is okay!! Students can work behind the scenes on the technical side of play performance, such as: creating sets, recording and running sound/special effects, microphones, and more! It takes people on stage and off stage to pull off a successful performance! Please email me prior to the first class if this is of more interest to you, dbyrnes85@yahoo.com. Parent performance will be at an outdoor venue on the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 24th (student attendance is required on this date). Our final class at CCE will be a self-assessment of the performance and cast party to celebrate their accomplishments.
Materials Fee: $10

MIDDLE SCHOOL (grades 6-8)

Art  Mrs. Brandi Matovina
The middle school art class will feature art-making with clay and with printmaking. We will divide our time equally between creating a slab-rolled clay piece (that will also be fired and glazed!), and harnessing the power of multiples through linoleum block printmaking! Middle school students should come to class willing to get messy with clay AND devote attention to even the simplest cut in the linoleum block. Let’s explore together!
Materials Fee: $10

School Newspaper  Mrs. Josey Hall
In this multi-disciplinary class, students will fill various roles on the school newspaper and work both as a team and individually. This class is creative as well as instructional. Students will learn reporting, editing, design, layout, graphics, photography, and more. The newspaper team will brainstorm a name and logo, and what sections they want to include in their school newspaper: from book reviews, to artwork, to current events happening right on campus, to teacher interviews, and more!  The sky’s the limit! This fun class will be very hands on and interactive. There is a place for everyone on this publication. Students will enjoy covering a variety of topics and working on their reporting/writing skills no matter their level. The school newspaper will be distributed to all students and teachers the last day of class.

HIGH SCHOOL (grades 9-12)

A Study of Shakespeare – Mrs. Ann Young
William Shakespeare is English literature’s best known poet and most regularly produced playwright in history. Texts: Suggested play editions from Ignatius Press, Memoria Press or students may use editions they already own. Ignatius Press editions of Julius Caesar ISBN: 9781586176167, Romeo and Juliet ISBN: 9781586174392.

Art  Mrs. Brandi Matovina
Our semester will straddle working with fine details, and getting our hands very messy! High school students will be placed on a rotation schedule for working on potters wheels CCE owns with the hopes that they will have a completed, thrown ceramics piece by the end of our time together! When not working on the wheel, the high school students will be capturing the beauty of highlights with graphite powder and grey erasers. All students should be prepared to get messy (we will regularly need smocks and baby wipes)! Come join in the mess!
